I am making an effort to truly live. i don't mean to imply by that that i haven't been alive before but, with my son being here and such a powerful force in my life, he's given me a freedom to be more. i think that sometimes we can get stuck, and just the fact that he's here says so much to me about my own existence. i didn't think i'd be able to have children, and this level of blessing is something i can't even put my finger on.

I don't feel like it's pressure. it's more of an obligation - not to entertain or be funny, but to have a certain levity. i mean, there's got to be a lightness in your leg. you have to be as light as you can be, and you don't have to be weighted down, stuck in your emotions and stuck in your body, stuck in your head. you just want to try and elevate something.

I had a lot of time to myself, and i would listen to a lot of music, mostly music that i knew fairly well and had a relationship with. and i'd think, well, what is it that i've never been able to do that this person or people are able to do with this song? why haven't i been able to do it, and what can they do that i wish i could do? and then i'd try to do that. i'd start each day getting into the songs, and i'd think about how i might get closer to this music that i love, but haven't been able to make before.

People get sick and sometimes they get better and sometimes they don't. and it doesn't matter if the sickness is cancer or if it's depression. sometimes the drugs work and sometimes they don't. sometimes the drugs work for a while and then they stop. sometimes the alternative stuff works and sometimes it doesn't. and sometimes you wonder if no outside interference makes any difference at all; if an illness is like a storm, if it simply has to run its course and, at the end of it, depending on how robust you are, you will be alive. or you will be dead.
