I have a hard time writing. most writers have a hard time writing. i have a harder time than most because i'm lazier than most. Real writers-that is, capital w writers-rarely make much money. their biggest reward is the occasional reader's response.... commentators-in-print voicing big fat opinions-you might call us small w writers-get considerably more feedback than writers. the letters i personally find most flattering are not the very rare ones that speak well of my editorials, but the occasional reader who wants to know who writes them. i always happily assume the letter-writers is implying that the editorials are so good that i couldn't have written them myself.

Music and writing do fold together in the sense that you have to have a certain level of skill in order to execute your ideas and you need a medium. the idea of improvisation is one that many writers fall into, and i improvise a great deal when i'm writing, but there's a structural framework that i'm working around, and that takes more time than the actual writing. once the characters get to yapping and talking, they'll move from one room to the next, and i just have to make sure that the house is built. that's really hard, that's the kind of thing that sits with you all day long.

I think i'm better wired for television. i love variety as far as a project. i'm easily bored and the schedule of a television show, it just keeps you going. i love theater and i think doing a sitcom in front of a live audience is the closest you can get to theater, and it's really the best mix of like standup and theater, is really a sitcom. i started as a standup and i still continue to do that as well, so i think i'm just a tv guy and happy for it. i think my movie career is kind of like my social life, i'm picky and not in demand. so it perhaps is working out.

At the end of the day, some authors will endure and most, including some very good ones, will not. why do i think reading is important? it is such an effective medium between mind and mind. we think largely in words. a medium made only of words doesn't impose the barrier of any other medium. it is naked and unprotected communication. that's how you get pregnant. may you always be so.
