I don’t believe it is possible to transcend race in this country. race is a factor in this society. the legacy of jim crow and slavery has not gone away. it is not an accident that african-americans experience high crime rates, are poor, and have less wealth. it is a direct result of our racial history.

If others tell us something we make assumptions, and if they don't tell us something we make assumptions to fulfill our need to know and to replace the need to communicate. even if we hear something and we don't understand we make assumptions about what it means and then believe the assumptions. we make all sorts of assumptions because we don't have the courage to ask questions.

As for slavery, there is no need for me to speak of its bad aspects. the only thing requiring explanation is the good side of slavery. i do not mean indirect slavery, the slavery of proletariat; i mean direct slavery, the slavery of the blacks in surinam, in brazil, in the southern regions of north america. direct slavery is as much the pivot upon which our present-day industrialism turns as are machinery, credit, etc. … slavery is therefore an economic category of paramount importance.

We have a tendency to make assumptions about everything! the problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are truth. we could swear they are real. we make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking-we take it personally-then we blame them and react by sending emotional poison in our word. that is why whenever we make assumptions, we're asking for problems. we make assumptions, we misunderstand, we take it personally, and we end up creating a whole big drama for nothing.

I have much more confidence in my ability, or any president or any leader's ability, to mobilize the american people around a multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment to help every child in poverty in this country than i am in being able to mobilize the country around providing a benefit specific to african americans as a consequence of slavery and jim crow.
