Climate change is real, caused by human activity and already devastating our nation and planet. the united states must lead the world in combating climate change and transforming our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and sustainability.

In the islamic world, the u.s. is seen in two quite different ways. one view recognizes what an extraordinary country the u.s. is.the other view is of the official united states, the united states of armies and interventions. the united states that in 1953 overthrew the nationalist government of mossadegh in iran and brought back the shah. the united states that has been involved first in the gulf war and then in the tremendously damaging sanctions against iraqi civilians. the united states that is the supporter of israel against the palestinians.

For me the two biggest issues are climate change and animal welfare/animal agriculture. and oddly enough animal agriculture is such a contributor to climate change. according to the united nations, 25% of climate change comes from animal agriculture, so every car, bus, boat, truck, airplane combined has less co2 and methane emissions than animal agriculture.

What i want is natural gas to be a bridge to a cleaner energy future, not a dam against a cleaner energy future, not a dead end. to get this right, to get the most out of it, we not only have to make sure we exploit natural gas in a clean way - it's a challenge - but we also have to make sure that we are instilling and implementing all the incentives to win solar, nuclear energy efficiency that will make them continually competitive with natural gas in the future.
Winning Bridges Challenges
The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. there may still be disputes about exactly how much we're contributing to the warming of the earth's atmosphere and how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no return. and unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe.
