It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. we needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly. our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.

We should be able to bring the practice of meditation hall into our daily lives. we need to discuss among ourselves how to do it. do you practice breathing between phone calls? do you practice smiling while cutting carrots? do you practice relaxation after hard hours of work? these are practical questions. if you know how to apply meditation to dinner time, leisure time, sleeping time, it will penetrate your daily life, and it will also have a tremendous effect on social concerns.

Relationship is action, is it not? action has meaning only in relationship; without understanding relationship, action on any level will only breed conflict. the understanding of relationship is infinitely more important than the search for any plan of action. the ideology, the pattern for action, prevents action. action based on ideology hinders the understanding of relationship between man and man.

The problem with deterrence - apparently sometimes forgotten by our former presidents - is that it is not static, but a creature of the moment, captive to impression, and nursed on action, not talk. it must be maintained hourly and can erode or be lost with a single act of failed nerve, despite all the braggadocio of threatened measures. and, once gone, the remedies needed for its restoration are always more expensive, deadly - and controversial - than would have been its simple maintenance.
