Hopefully, any character i play has an anchor in reality. the more fantastical characters, or fantastical worlds that they inhabit are really fun and allow you, in some ways, to tell stories and reveal things about our lives that would be harder to take, in a more realistic setting.

These short stories are vast structures existing mostly in the subconscious of our cultural history. they will live with the reader long after the words have been translated into ideas and dreams. that's because a good short story crosses the borders of our nations and our prejudices and our beliefs. a good short story asks a question that can't be answered in simple terms. and even if we come up with some understanding, years later, while glancing out of a window, the story still has the potential to return, to alter right there in our mind and change everything.

If the point of life is the same as the point of a story, the point of life is character transformation. if i got any comfort as i set out on my first story, it was that in nearly every story, the protagonist is transformed. he's a jerk at the beginning and nice at the end, or a coward at the beginning and brave at the end. if the character doesn't change, the story hasn't happened yet. and if story is derived from real life, if story is just condensed version of life then life itself may be designed to change us so that we evolve from one kind of person to another.

A sob racks my body again, and he wraps his arms around me so tightly i find it difficult to breathe, but it doesn't matter. my dignified weeping gives way to full-on ugliness, my mouth open and my face contorted and sounds like a dying animal coming from my throat. if this continues i will break apart, and maybe that would be better, maybe it would be better to shatter and bear nothing.
