If the point of life is the same as the point of a story, the point of life is character transformation. if i got any comfort as i set out on my first story, it was that in nearly every story, the protagonist is transformed. he's a jerk at the beginning and nice at the end, or a coward at the beginning and brave at the end. if the character doesn't change, the story hasn't happened yet. and if story is derived from real life, if story is just condensed version of life then life itself may be designed to change us so that we evolve from one kind of person to another.

Whoever invented the meeting must have had hollywood in mind. i think they should consider giving oscars for meetings: best meeting of the year, best supporting meeting, best meeting based on material from another meeting.
Work Thinking Years
Reading is everything. reading makes me feel like i've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. reading makes me smarter. reading gives me something to talk about later on. reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. reading is grist. reading is bliss.
Real Reading Book
I think my deepest criticism of the educational system . . . is that it's all based upon a distrust of the student. don't trust him to follow his own leads; guide him; tell him what to do; tell him what he should think; tell him what he should learn. consequently at the very age when he should be developing adult characteristics of choice and decision making, when he should be trusted on some of those things, trusted to make mistakes and to learn from those mistakes, he is, instead, regimented and shoved into a curriculum, whether it fits him or not.

There's a rhythm to script [ in "i don't feel at home in this world anymore"], as well, especially the pacing of it. but there definitely were times when i would say something and [ macon blair] would say, "i didn't think to deliver it like that" or, "i didn't think it had that meaning." and he'd say, "i like it. i think it's good." so he's open. he's not battering it into you.
