There are a lot of good comics, no doubt, but as far as the quality of the comics goes, i think what you have is a bunch of situational comics - there are black comics that work only black crowds, gay comics that do only gay crowds, and southern comics that only work down south, and so on with asian, latino, indian, midgets, etc. the previous generation's comics were better because they had to make everybody laugh.

I try to stay with it and i try to stay in contact with comedians and just keep comedians in my life 'cause comedians are their own species. if you get away from them, especially as a comedian, i think it's dangerous.

You can't expect everyone to laugh or applaud you for doing edgy things. sometimes you'll miss. but i think comedians are artists and there's a value in failure. it kind of works both ways between comedians and audiences. the audience has to understand that comedians are going to sometimes tell a joke that doesn't work out with dark subjects, and the comedian has to understand that sometimes they 'll fail and it's not the audience's fault for not getting it or loving it.

The lovely thing about writing comics for so many years is that comics is a medium that is mistaken for a genre. it's not that there are not genres within comics, but because comics tend to be regarded as a genre in itself, content becomes secondary; as long as i was doing a comic, people would pick it up.

I live making comics. comics is an industrial art but less suffering, because comics are for young people who are more adventurous. i do that. i live off comics, and then i write books, but when you want movies, you cannot make movies without money.

The cord-cutting generation hates cable tv 'cause they think they're corporations and they rip people off and they make you buy a bunch of channels you never watch in order to get the channels that you do watch. they've always said, "we want to be a la cart. we want to be able to cord-cut. we want to be able to watch what we want." so it's now evolving where if they only want to watch hbo they can but they have to pay for it. if they only want to watch cinemax, they can, but have to pay for it.
