Destiny ... a word which means more than we can find any definitions for. it is a word which can have no meaning in a mechanical universe: if that which is wound up must run down, what destiny is there in that? destiny is not necessitarianism, and it is not caprice: it is something essentially meaningful. each man has his destiny, though some men are undoubtedly "men of destiny" in a sense in which most men are not.

Every scientist, through personal study and research, completes himself and his own humanity. ... scientific research constitutes for you, as it does for many, the way for the personal encounter with truth, and perhaps the privileged place for the encounter itself with god, the creator of heaven and earth. science shines forth in all its value as a good capable of motivating our existence, as a great experience of freedom for truth, as a fundamental work of service. through research each scientist grows as a human being and helps others to do likewise.

Science has long been in the value business. despite a widespread belief to the contrary, scientific validity is not the result of scientists abstaining from making value judgments; rather, scientific validity is the result of scientists making their best efforts to value principles of reasoning that link their beliefs to reality, through reliable chains of evidence and argument.

There is no "scientific worldview" just as there is no uniform enterprise "science" - except in the minds of metaphysicians, school masters, and scientists blinded by the achievements of their own particular niche... there is no objective principle that could direct us away from the supermarket "religion" or the supermarket "art" toward the more modern, and much more expensive supermarket "science." besides, the search for such guidance would be in conflict with the idea of individual responsibility which allegedly is an important ingredient of a "rational" or scientific age.

Bohr’s standpoint, that a space-time description is impossible, i reject a limine. physics does not consist only of atomic research, science does not consist only of physics, and life does not consist only of science. the aim of atomic research is to fit our empirical knowledge concerning it into our other thinking. all of this other thinking, so far as it concerns the outer world, is active in space and time. if it cannot be fitted into space and time, then it fails in its whole aim and one does not know what purpose it really serves.
