Darwin's principle of natural selection leads to the prediction that the proper way to analyze any evolutionary development is to see the new features as adaptive to environments. and that's a perfectly good principle. the problem is that there are many evolutionary biologists who view everything that happens in evolution as directly evolved for adaptive benefit. and that just doesn't work. whenever you build a structure for adaptive reasons, the structure is going to exhibit properties that have nothing to do with adaptation. they're just side consequences.

A society that puts equality - in the sense of equality of outcome - ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality or freedom. the use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom. on the other hand, a society that puts freedom first will, as a happy by-product, end up with both greater freedom and greater equality. freedom means diversity but also mobility. it preserves the opportunity for today's less well off to become tomorrow's rich, and in the process, enables almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a richer and fuller life.

The diversity of mankind is a basic postulate of our knowledge of human beings. but if mankind is diverse and individuated, then how can anyone propose equality as an ideal? every year, scholars hold conferences on equality and call for greater equality, and no one challenges the basic tenet. but what justification can equality find in the nature of man? if each individual is unique, how else can he be made 'equal' to others than by destroying most of what is human in him and reducing human society to the mindless uniformity of the ant heap?

I speak about universal evolution and teleological evolution, because i think the process of evolution reflects the wisdom of nature. i see the need for wisdom to become operative. we need to try to put all of these things together in what i call an evolutionary philosophy of our time.
