We must be forewarned that only rarely does a text easily lend itself to the reader's curiosity... the reading of a text is a transaction between the reader and the text, which mediates the encounter between the reader and writer. it is a composition between the reader and the writer in which the reader "rewrites" the text making a determined effort not to betray the author's spirit.

What is a scene? a) a scene starts and ends in one place at one time (the aristotelian unities of time and place-this stuff goes waaaayyyy back). b) a scene starts in one place emotionally and ends in another place emotionally. starts angry, ends embarrassed. starts lovestruck, ends disgusted. c) something happens in a scene, whereby the character cannot go back to the way things were before. make sure to finish a scene before you go on to the next. make something happen.
Character Unity Goes On
What i don't like is when i see stuff that i know has had a lot of improv done or is playing around where there's no purpose to the scene other than to just be funny. what you don't want is funny scene, funny scene, funny scene, and now here's the epiphany scene and then the movie's over.
Purpose Done Want
I love actors and i understand what has to happen within a scene. any scene is an acting scene and actors never act alone, so there has to be an interchange. if it's a dialog scene, if it's a love scene, it doesn't matter because you need to establish a situation.
Acting Needs Actors
The book is finished by the reader. a good novel should invite the reader in and let the reader participate in the creative experience and bring their own life experiences to it, interpret with their own individual life experiences. every reader gets something different from a book and every reader, in a sense, completes it in a different way.
Book Creative Way
I actually dislike, more than many people, working through literary allusion. i just feel that there's something a bit snobbish or elitist about that. i don't like it as a reader, when i'm reading something. it's not just the elitism of it; it jolts me out of the mode in which i'm reading. i've immersed myself in the world and then when the light goes on i'm supposed to be making some kind of literary comparison to another text. i find i'm pulled out of my kind of fictional world, i'm asked to use my brain in a different kind of way. i don't like that.
