Though i do not believe that my desire for paradise proves that i shall enjoy it, i think it a pretty good indication that such a thing exists and that some men will.

It is often said that the buddha's teaching is only a raft to help you cross the river, a finger pointing to the moon. don't maistake the finger for the moon. the raft is not the shore. if we cling to the raft, if we cling to the finger, we miss everything. we cannot, in the name of the finger or the raft kill each other. human life is more precious than any ideology, any doctrine.

Farmers everywhere provide bread for all humanity, but it is christ alone who is the bread of life...even if all the physical hunger of the world were satisfied, even if everyone who is hungry were fed by his or her own labor or by the generosity of others, the deepest hunger of man would still exist...therefore, i say, come, all of you, to christ. he is the bread of life. come to christ and you will never be hungry again.

I think it's very pretty. can it be pretty if no one thinks it's pretty? i think it's pretty. if you're the only one? that's pretty pretty. and what about the boys? don't you want them to think you're pretty? i wouldn't want a boy to think i was pretty unless he was the kind of boy who thought i was pretty.

Therefore bread was created for the glory of christ. hunger and thirst were created for the glory of christ. and fasting was created for the glory of christ. which means that bread magnifies christ in two ways: by being eaten with gratitude for his goodness, and by being forfeited out of hunger for god himself. when we eat, we taste the emblem of our heavenly food—the bread of life. and when we fast we say, “i love the reality above the emblem.” in the heart of the saint both eating and fasting are worship. both magnify christ.

My idea of the christian religion is, that it is an inspiration and its vital consequences--an inspiration and a life--god's life breathed into a man and breathed through a man--the highest inspiration and the highest life of every soul which it inhabits; and, furthermore, that the soul which it inhabits can have no high issue which is not essentially religious.
