Justice Department seizes millions of dollars in cryptocurrency allegedly linked with terrorism

DOJ has seized thousands and thousands of {dollars} in cryptocurrency that it alleges is linked with terrorism campaigns.

The Department of Justice has seized cryptocurrency accounts that it alleges are associated with three terrorism campaigns. The operation was detailed Thursday, when a legal grievance was unsealed within the District of Columbia. Beneath warrants, authorities seized greater than 300 cryptocurrency accounts, 4 web sites, 4 Fb pages and thousands and thousands of {dollars}. It quantities to the US government’s “largest-ever seizure of cryptocurrency within the terrorism context.”

The teams focused by the seizure had been al-Qaeda; Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS); and al-Qassam Brigades, the army wing of Hamas. The three campaigns allegedly solicited cryptocurrency donations globally, in response to the DOJ.

Al-Qaeda used a bitcoin cash laundering community that it operated through messaging app Telegram and social media, DOJ alleges. It additionally alleged the ISIS marketing campaign used COVID-19 pandemic-related fraud, gaining cryptocurrency by promoting faux private protecting gear like N95 masks.

“Our enemies use fashionable know-how, social media platforms and cryptocurrency to facilitate their evil and violent agendas,” alleged Legal professional Common William P. Barr. “We’ll prosecute their cash laundering, terrorist financing and violent unlawful actions wherever we discover them.”

DOJ labored alongside the Division of Homeland Safety, the FBI, the IRS, the DC United States Legal professional’s Workplace and Nationwide Safety Division. The funds seized can be utilized for the US Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund as soon as the case concludes.
