Whereas Rivian’s expertise is most keenly mirrored within the van’s exterior and below the hood, Amazon had appreciable management over the inside. Along with a spacious “dancefloor” for straightforward in-vehicle maneuvering, drivers will discover three ranges of shelving, strengthened bulkheads and doorways for higher safety, and two shows that — in tandem with a collection of cameras — supply a 360-degree view across the van. And since that is Amazon we’re speaking about, drivers can get updates about route choices and the climate by asking Alexa.

By 2022, Amazon goals to have 10,000 electrical supply autos on the highway, as half of a bigger environmental pledge to go internet zero carbon by 2040. (Keep in mind, that doesn’t imply Amazon will stop all carbon emissions — simply that it’ll offset these emissions by eradicating as a lot carbon from the environment because it places into it.) 10,000 vans are simply the tip of the iceberg, although: Amazon positioned an order for 100,000 electric vehicles from Rivian in late 2019, months after it led a $700 million funding round for the EV startup. Amazon expects to get the remaining 90,000 customized electrical vans on the highway by 2030.

Whereas its partnership with Rivian has resulted in an eco-friendly first, Amazon has been actively courting different automakers because it builds out its fleet of electrical autos. Simply this previous August, Amazon ordered an extra 1,800 electrical supply vans from Mercedes, in response to CNBC.
